Hi
a neighbour about 8 houses down just came to our door and threatened
us with a law suit if our 4 year old cat goes on her property again.
I cannot keep my cat inside - he is very noisy when he wants to go out
and besides I am not willing to keep him inside (i dont want to get
into the indoor / outdoor argument with people)
Do i have to get rid of the cat? Am i breaking any laws - i could not
find any that apply to cats only dogs regarding leash laws etc.
I live in Nassau county new york.
Incedentally I think that the woman was more bothered about the fact
that I let my cat out as she told me it was cruel to do so especially
in the winter when it snows. I guess that she did not realise that I
let my cat vout when he ASKS to go out unlike the claws on her 2 cats
which were taken out to keep the cat indoors.
Please help me with any advice - otherwise does anyone know where I
can find a new home for a pedigree bengal asian leopard cat in the NY
tristate area.
Thanks
AH

COLLAR AND TAGS IN PLACE, SHOTS UP TO DATE? LET YOUR CAT DO ITS THING.
THERE IS A LAW REGUARDING THIS, BUT THINK ITS FOR STRAYS. SHE CAN LIVE-TRAP
YOUR CAT AND/OR POISION IT .NO NEED TO TELL HER YOU 'LET' YOUR CAT OUT,
ONLY THAT HE BOLTS THROUGH THE DOOR OFTEN. YOU DO NOT BELEVE IN CLAW-REMOVEL
BECAUSE ITS CRUEL. THER'ES NOTHING WRONG WITH YOUR WAY OF THINKING , MY
CAT IS FREE TO USE THE CAT DOOR AND SO ARE ALL THE OTHER CATS WHO WONDER IN.
YOU DO HOWEVER HAVE A NICE CAT (BREED) AND IT HAS A 50/50 CHANCE OF BEING
HURT ON THE STREETS AS ALMOST NONE AT HOME. THE CAT DOSEN'T HAVE TO GO OUT,
FOOD AND LITTER-BOX, TOYS AND YOU ARE ALL MOST DOM. ANIMALS NEED . IF YOU
THINK A PLAY MATE WOULD EASE YOUR MIND, FIND A PLAY MATE. A LITTLE DOG OR
ANOTHER CAT/ KITTEN. LOCKING YOUR CAT UP IS MORE FRIGHTING TO YOU THAN THE
CAT. CHECK WITH THE ASPCA FOR ANY OF YOUR RIGHTS. SORRY I COULDN'T BE
MORE HELPFUL.

Hi
I would not get rid of my cat because of one complaining neighbor. (what
about the 1st-7th house down??)
If I were you I'd go out and get me some legal advice. In the Netherlands
you can ask for free if there is a law against cats walking around on
neighbor's properties. Hope it works that way for your country too!
(Tsss, a lawsuit... whahahaha)

Wait a minute. This is not a legal issue, it's a neighbor issue. If your
pets piss your neighbors off and you start bleating about lawyers and local
ordinances the pet becomes the target of the anger. Here is what I have
found very effective after having lived in a snooty neighborhood with my
fleet of indoor/outdoor cats:
1) Pretend to care that kitty is leaving foul turds in shallow graves in the
bed of Mrs. McGuilicuttie's rose bushes (or whatever offense is alleged).
2) Pretend to cooperate. Apologize and ask her to phone you whenever your
cat wanders into her yard and you'll come right over and set it right. Tell
her if she finds oneof the aforementioned turds in her rose garden that she
should call and you will send a team over to decontaminate. Of course she
won't call and if she does you can say you'll be right over after the
funeral home comes to pick up your husband/wife's still-warm body. Don't go.
3) I always tell my neighbors that my cats are disinclined to being sprayed
with garden hoses. This gives the neighbor a way to feel in control and
supports the illusion that you care or are cooperating. It also diffuses
anger on Mrs. Fussbucket's part which supports the MOST IMPORTANT THING OF
ALL: PROTECT YOUR CAT BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY. The least confrontational
approach is what is in your cat's best interest. Or you can keep it inside.
Besides, the cats will have a field day taunting her to come running
outside, turn on the hose and spray them while they casually scoot under the
fence into safety. If the cat gets wet then you are that much closer to a
resolution unless your cat is as dumb as a setter.
4) Tell Old Lady/Old Man Colostomy the cat's name and how much it means to
you. It is, after all, the only thing you have left to remember your
children by after "the fire". Most of these old windsacks just want to be
right. They are not really all that outraged at the occasional feline
trespasser, the stumpie in the flower bed or even the half-bird/mouse/lizard
leftover from your cat's recent poaching spree in the venerated and hallowed
ground of house #8. They just want somebody to say "You are right. I am
sorry sir/maam." Just mimic those "workfare" graduates who answer the phones
at credit card companies, phone companies and their ilk with their
placations and mollifiying faux emphaticism.
De-escalate hostilities and you, the cat(s) and Mrs. Prunegoobler will all
be happier. I know of too, too many instances of unwelcome cats, hostile
neighbors and BB guns. Modern BB guns have muzzle velocities in the HUNDREDS
of FEET per SECOND which will kill a cat.
If the nice-nice routine does not work just have somebody bust #8's legs.
Look up bail bondsmen in the yellow pages. These are the most reputable of
people but they can always refer you to a underemployed sociopath who needs
a few extra bucks. If that's a bit more than you arecomfortable with just
post the neighbor's elephone number, name and adress on this group and we'll
do the rest.
