Big, Big Scare Tonight

Our cat Pebbles, who is about two years old and who we have had for about a
year now, has never shown any inclination to go outside. Even though, we have
always tried to be careful when going outside, that is, to make sure that
Pebbles hasn't decided to follow us.

Tonight our garage door, one that is opened and closed electrically, jammed.
I opened the door from inside to the garage and tried to raise and lower the
garage door by the up/down switch that is in the garage but right by the door
from the garage into the house.

Just as the door started a downward movement I saw a cat go by at lightning
speed, a can that was, as best I could see, the same color as Pebbles.

In a state of panic Nancy and I went outside and looked hither, thither, and
yon for Pebbles. We called out her name. Unfortunately it was nighttime and
it was difficult to see.

We searched for about a half of an hour without any luck. I went inside to
get a flashlight and there was Pebbles lying in the middle of our bed and
giving me the "What is your problem" look!

So, there's a happy ending to the story. My conclusion is that the cat that I
saw zooming from the garage was a neighborhood feral that came into the
garage while the garage door was open.

Methinks my heart is still beating at an extra fast pace!

Wow, that would be a scare.

How long do you think the cat was stuck in your garage? Hope it wasn't
too starved.

[responding to my reciting how I literally panicked when I thought what was
likely a neighborhood feral cat that shot out of my garage when I opened the
garage door was my own never outdoors cat]

The garage door had been left open only a few hours. We live in a condominium
of about 30 units. The cat that shot out was one I have no recollection of
having seen before. The condo complex is next door to a large field that has
a number of feral cats and it could well be that the cat in question was one
of those. Periodically animal control traps as many of those feral cats as it
can and takes them to a shelter for rehabilitation, neutering, and placement.

That is, indeed, a scare!  Glad all is well.

My worst scare happened a couple of years ago when we had only 2 cats,
Millie and Bailey.

I arrived home from work one day to find the front door standing wide open.
At first I suspected a break in, but my greatest fear was that both our
cats were probably gone.  As I went in I called their names with no
response.  I began searching the house and discovered Millie curled up,
sound asleep on her blanket in a lounge chair, but Bailey was nowhere in
sight.  When I couldn't find him anywhere inside, I began looking in the
front yard.  No Bailey.  When I reached the back yard, I found him asleep
in the sun in the middle of the patio table!

As it turned out, there was a problem with the latch plate on the door
jamb.  We thought we fixed it, but the same thing happened again two weeks
later.  This time I found them both inside sound asleep.

We now have 3 more very young cats.  I don't think I'd be that lucky with
them, especially one of them, as she was a rescue that had been living on
the streets.

I'm so glad your baby was at home!!!

Oh--we've been there a couple of times when our "houdini cat" actually did
duck out under the door. I  SO know how fast your heart was beating. We've
had them hunker down in a good hidey-hole inside the house a dozen times or
so, too!

Though our youngest doesn't seem to be food motivated (we rescued her
quickly after she was dumped so she was not hungry for more than a few
hours, the other two struggled for food a little longer) we always sing the
"Meow Mix" song every time we fill the bowl with kibble or give them a treat
or a can of "meaties".  If they get out of the house, singing the song
almost always brings them back, even if they wander away a bit.

Having said that, one time our houdini, Mini slipped out under our feet at
night and stayed out.  We gave up after over an hour of walking the
neighborhood, singing and calling her and went inside. We'd already had a
few crises that day and gave up at 1:00 am.  I left food and water in the
garage and left the door up a few inches. My husband went up to bed and I
took a blanket and pillow and slept on the couch in the front room.  We
hoped that Mini would come back to the front door and Buffy would see her
through the front window and wake me up.  Buffy howled once before when Mini
escaped and came home, during the day.  Sure enough, about 2:30 am I awoke
to Buffy howling and Mini peeking in the front window hoping I'd open it for
her. Little $h!t

Congratulations!
