Hi -

We adopted a cat a few years ago. When we first brought him to the vet, they
suspected a past eye infection or upper respiratory problem.  After a course
of eye drops and I think also antibiotics but still a drippy eye, we took
him back for another visit.  Another exam revealed that probably as a result
of the past eye infection, one of Jonesy's tear ducts is permanently closed.

The stuff that comes out of his right eye is not clear like tears - it's
brownish and it stains fabric and leaves spots on wood, comforters, table
tops, whatever he's explored that day.  This doesn't seem to bother the cat
in the least - so it's not so much a health or discomfort issue for him.

We wipe his eye whenever we can and he's a pretty fastidious groomer.  After
a major house cleaning over the past few weeks, I've realized just how many
Jonesy spots there are around the house.

The vet didn't offer any solutions and we'd rather not resort to surgery -
not that we even know if that's an option.

Does anyone else have a cat with a similar issue and have you found any way
avoid the constant mess?

Thanks

I have no idea how to help, except to say that its worth putting up
with. My Beauty pisses everywhere, I put up with it. Its not her
fault. I love her.
The duct problem is not his fault either.

I'm not a vet but what about the stuff they use on humans the artifcal
tears...that help moistine and clear oui...if a cat or dog is peeing
where he shouldn't I've been taught first make sure the litter box is
cleaned daily and washed about once a week with a disinfectant...calll
the vet and ask..and last but not least clean everything she pees on
with either vinigar or a commercial such as liysol or clorox product I
like to use the wipes myself not htat I have a cat like that cause my
litter box gets cleaned often enough they are all more than happy to
use it..I hope you don't rent...because you could be
liable..<sigh>-Kenda

I'd be looking at surgery to unblock the tear duct.
