Hello,
I'm just trying to figure out what's up with my cat (7 yrs old, female,
Oxfordshire) ...
About three weeks ago she suddenly became unwell - she hadn't eaten or
drunk for 24 hours and seemed very lethargic. We took her to the vet,
who gave her a course of antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory jab and
also took a blood sample. Turned out her kidneys were not functioning
properly, so we got a course of tablets. She improved only slightly
(still lethargic, but ate and drank just enough to survive). She was
much better the day after we didn't manage to give her the kidney
tablet, and also after the course was finished (10 days), though she
went downhill again after a couple of days.
Her new blood test results showed that she'd deteriorated since the
first test. She's had about 10 days since then with no medication and
she's been extremely lethargic, eating and drinking the bare minimum,
but keeping stable. The vet booked her in for an ultrasound scan, but
that's next week. The vet also said she'd seen some similar cases
recently in Oxfordshire - could this be a virus that's causing it???
Yesterday, she seemed to make a miraculous recovery - eating (and
making up for lost time!), drinking, running, purring and washing as
normal.
Has anyone seen anything similar, and is there anyone from Oxfordshire
who's seen anything like this recently???
Thanks for reading this lengthy message!

Sorry, Iain, not from Oxfordshire, nor have I ever had an older cat
with these symptoms, but I hope she continues to improve, that she
gets a positive diagnosis next week, and that you have many more happy
years together.
Best regards,
Allison

Thanks Allison. We've finally found that she's got a 'massive
infection' of E Coli which apparently explains everything. Cue 6 weeks
of giving tablets to a cat twice a day...!

Iain, so glad to hear she's going to be well. OTOH, six weeks of
pilling a cat twice daily could get old very quickly. Maybe try
wrapping each pill in cheese? This has worked for me.
Take care.
Cheers,
Allison

Just shove the pill to the back of the throat. That works. They have a
swallow reflex that kicks in.
It's worth it to see the healing. I've had to give my cat Beauty pills
on occasion. Good luck, Limey!
