How to Get Rid of Hair Mats in Long-Haired Cats

Hello all --- I have a Maine Coon cat that is very 'testy' when I try to
comb him out.  In the past, the hair mats were so bad that I had to have
him shaved completely under anesthesia.  The poor guy - he looked like a
French poodle, and was miserable until the hair grew back.  I won't do
that again.  The vet tells me that they won't comb him out even under
anesthesia - they only shave.  Cat groomers won't do it since anesthesia
is involved.  Now, the mats are bad again, and I am hoping that someone
has come up with a method to loosen the mats so they can be removed
quickly and easily to save my fingers and hands, and to cause less
stress for the 'big guy.'  Any thoughts?

Jeff,

We also have a Maine Coon cat and so far Pebbles hasn't had a problem with
mats. We have been judicious about frequent grooming to remove loose hair and
to perhaps stop matting before it gets out of control. We recently bought a
grooming tool called Furminator and have found it to be particularly
efficient at removing the undercoat before it begins to mat.

I've heard great things about the Furminator tool!  Excellent choice.

To remove mats once they develop, try using a seam ripper from your
sewing kit.  Pick at the hairs one by one and slowly loosen the mat.
It could take some time, but the result is worth it.  Cut what doesn't
loosen.  Be sure to keep the area brushed while the hair is growing
back or you will have a mess again.

BTW - If you make a great fuss about the cat in a "lion cut" your cat
will think it's great and strut around.  S/He won't hate it so much.

Morgen,
Thanks for your reply.  What exactly is the Furminator tool, and where
do you get it?  Your suggestion about the seam ripper makes sense.  Now,
I just have to get a sewing kit!

A friend recommended that I use welding gloves since my cat will not
tolerate any attention to his hair mats. Thereby, I protect my hands and
arms.  I don't know - may scare the hell out of him!

This thread will soon vanish because I am posting but here goes:  Just brush
you cats hair frequently.  Be persistent and the cat will come to love
getting brushed.  One of my cats use to be scared as hell of the grooming
brush.  Now I have to be the one to say, "No I just brushed you a few hours
ago dude".  My cats would want brushing 24/7 if I had the stamina.  Both my
cats are super long haired and use to get those hair clumps.  Not since i
started brushing them every couple days.  Sorry to kill the thread everyone
by responding.  Some tech geek in here likes to delete anything I seem to
get involved in.  Hope the hair mats go away.  Oh one more thing:  I have a
friend that vacuums his cat every few days.  He swears by it.  Says it keeps
the dead hair out and cat always has a healthy coat.  Anyone else vacuum
their cats for grooming reasons?  Good luck

I haven't tried vacuuming a cat but I frequently did such on my bloodhounds
and they loved it, leaning into the vacuum as it went over their body.

As a somewhat aside, I had one cat who went into ecstasy when she heard me
turn on the back vibrator. She would lean into the vibrator as hard as she
could. Her name was Lorraine and the vibrator, which I still have, was long
ago dubbed "The Lorraine-o-brator."

My current cat, Pebbles, loves to be ultra-vigorously rubbed, especially on
the belly, and when such is done she lies on her back and just stares into my
face with those huge eyes of hers, the staring being accompanied by lots of
heavy duty purring and sometimes tongue licking on my arms.
